2019's Oscar Nominations: Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born & More

On Sunday, February 24th, the 91st Academy Awards will take place, and like every year the nominations are a cause for both excitement and criticism. Roma and The Favourite are two of the leading movies with 10 nominations each. Glenn Close’s role in The Wife has given her her 7th Oscar nomination for “Best Actress.” There are also quite a few actors getting their first nominations this year, such as Rami Malek, Lady Gaga, Olivia Colman, Yalitza Aparicio, Marina de Tavira, Regina King, Sam Elliott, and Adam Driver.

One of the most surprising nominations is that of Black Panther for “Best Picture,” making it the first superhero movie to ever be nominated for that award. During the nomination process, there was a lot of speculation about Black Panther. There was some public outcry from people saying it deserved “Best Picture,” but it was generally believed that it wouldn’t get nominated due to the Oscars historic prejudice against superhero movies. Despite this initial prediction, Black Panther was nominated and its victory at the SAG Awards shows that it does have a chance in the best picture race.

Although many people are happy that their favorite movie of the year was nominated, there is still plenty to say about this year’s snubs. One of the most disappointing award snubs, feel-good Mr. Rogers documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor? for not being in the running for “Best Documentary Feature.” Also, the much discussed rom-com, Crazy Rich Asians, didn’t receive any nominations, which gave some ground to the idea that only “serious films” get nominated. Bo Burnham’s directorial debut, Eighth Grade, was also surprisingly absent from the nominations list, despite it having a 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and its actors, director, and screenplay all receiving significant praise this year. Other movies that have received a lot of positive attention this year, but haven’t been nominated include Hereditary, Paddington 2, Sorry to Bother You, and The Death of Stalin.
