We Come From an Age

By: Abby Traxler

We come from an age where we claim stereotypes don’t define us Where we are held to standards high above our heads Or pushed down until we are considered even more worthless than the dirt on someone’s shoe We come from an age where credit goes where credit’s due Where history is no longer focusing on the men Or over exaggerating one person’s or country’s purpose We come from an age where we told it is safe to dream Because if we work hard enough It can become a reality Where the dreams of some come easily While others have to put theirs on hold We come from an age where communication is at our fingertips Where some don’t understand the power of silence Yet some know it too well We come from an age where crime should be gone Yet looking outside all I see is a battlefield Where the fight is for Those who defy stereotypes Those who deserve credit Those who dream Those who have been silenced So tell me know Oh so wonderful higher power Why is all this fighting happening In your own backyard You say you want peace Then where is the peace There’s a reason for this war And it seems we’re on opposite sides
